Movies with Meaning

Postby warisimmoral » Fri Oct 16, 2009 2:33 pm

Ha, ha, being the first person to post an introduction, it's looking like my odds of winning that free movie are quite high! Although a prize was admittedly part of my motivation for joining this forum, I do consider myself to be a rather big fan of film, so I'm sure there will be other benefits as well.

As for who I am, I could try to identify myself through some of the characters in my favorite movies such as "V", Will Hunting, Detective John Hartigan, Roland (only has a Christian name which is quite ironic considering the movie), or either of the McManus brothers. However, this might not be too helpful, and it would leave out the fact that I'm also hugely entertained by the shenanigans of goofballs like Ron Burgundy and some foreign guy named Borat.

I'm drawn most toward movies that make me think, and particularly those that leave me questioning the status quo and what I've always been taught. Here I'll end the character games and simply name some of the flicks I've recently watched and found particularly meaningful (or funny):

Taxi to the Dark Side (http://taxitothedarkside.com/taxi/)
500 Days of Summer (http://www.thecinemaphiles.com/reviews/500-reasons-to-love-summer/)
Shawshank Redemption
The Matrix
Year One
North by Northwest
Sir! No, Sir! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jULC3SCX9wE&feature=player_embedded)

Okay, maybe they're not all that meaningful, but I liked 'em anyway. Now if you're really interested in finding out about me personally, you can do some reading (or watching) on my own website http://warisimmoral.com

^your odds of winning a free movie have just diminished, I'm afraid.

As far as movies with meaning are concerned I would have to place an argument for "Muppet's Treasure Island."

I haven't yet seen Taxi to the Dark Side, though I really want to. A couple winters ago I was in Houston on a business trip and I decided to go to theater while there one night. I went to a cinema that had all foreign films, indie films, or limited release films and was stuck deciding between Taxi to the Dark Side, 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days, In Bruges, and Be Kind Rewind.

I chose In Bruges and needless to say I'm very happy I picked that one as it was my favorite film of 2008. Oddly enough I caught up with the other two mentioned as well. It's only Taxi to the Dark Side I haven't seen...hmmm...I need to get on that.

Though your chances of winning are quite high at the moment, I think they might be slightly lower than you think, though. Not everyone has posted in the introduction forum...some have chosen to post elsewhere :P Still, though, I think you have a 1 in 4 shot right now.

Since you like thinkers; have you seen Primer? Granted, it doesn't really challenge the status quo (though it's not even about that in this film), but it certainly is a heady movie.
